11:00 am - Facing Mirrors (Aynehaye Rooberoo)

In the first film from Iran with a transgender protagonist, Adineh (“Eddie”) is awaiting a passport to go abroad for sex-reassignment surgery, while her father pressures her to marry her cousin. When she crosses paths with a female taxi driver whose husband is in jail, what at first seems like an implausible friendship achieves profound sympathy and solidarity through their mutual oppression, cutting across class and cultural differences. Like last year’s Oscar winner A Separation, Facing Mirrors offers an intriguing view of Iranian society and shows it to be far more complex and humane than we might imagine. Shayesteh Irani’s magnetic, heartbreaking performance as Eddie anchors this incredible movie.

Director: Negar Azarbayjani / Iran, 2011, 102 minutes
in Farsi with English subtitles

3:30 pm - I Stand Corrected

In 2005, virtuoso jazz bassist John Leitham, who had played with the likes of Mel Tormé and Doc Severinsen, publicly transitioned to embrace life as Jennifer Leitham. Although the jazz community was not always welcoming, Jennifer was undeterred, retaining her youthful energy and passion for her instrument (which she famously plays left-handed). Filled with lively performances, archival footage, and insightful commentary, I Stand Corrected will win over even the least jazzy viewer in the crowd!

Director: Andrea Meyerson / USA, 2012, 83 minutes

Invited Guests: Jennifer Leitham, Andrea Meyerson
