UCSB alum Matthew Mishory crafts a stirring, beautifully rendered, and imaginative recreation of the life of movie icon James Dean before he rose to fame. Dean is the ultimate unobtainable object, with his lovers—male and female—never able to fully hold him, but the person most lost is Dean himself. Shot in black and white, this movie casts an ethereal spell, not unlike the famed actor himself.

Academy Award winners Olympia Dukakis and Brenda Fricker play a feisty senior-citizen couple, Stella and Dottie, who have lived together on the coast of Maine for thirty years. When a nasty fall lands Dottie in a nursing home—indefinitely, as her granddaughter would have it—Stella rides to her partner’s rescue and they make a break for Canada, aiming to get married so they can never again be separated. Along the way, they acquire a hunky gay hitchhiker, tangle with border officials, and go on a series of adventures alternately hilarious and poignant.
