8:30 pm - Stories of Our Lives
An anthology of five short films portraying true stories of LGBTQI life in Kenya.
Homophobia is not just strong in Kenya, but institutionalized. Adapting nearly 200 interviews from LGBTQI people around the country into a mosaic of dramatic vignettes, this anthology offers filmmaking that is quietly inspiring and resolutely life-affirming. The collection is currently banned in Kenya for “promoting homosexuality, which is contrary to our national norms and values.”
In Swahili and English with English subtitlesDir. Jim Chuchu / 2014, Kenya, 61 minutes
Preceded by trailers of more movies from the 24th OUTrageous Film Festival, and followed by a dessert reception.
Sponsored by the UCSB Multicultural Center
